Here you will find an ever changing selection of clay pipes which are surplus to my own personal study. Items might include earlier pieces dating back as far as c.1600, although the majority will date from the 17th-20th Century. More recent collectibles might include designs that are still made today using the original moulds. I sometimes also have books for sale. Have a browse through and if you need more help then do ask. You may order and pay immediately through the shopping basket system provided. Remember that my stock changes from month to month so do come back for another visit soon.

Necklace 1
I have made this clay pipe necklace using pieces of original Dutch pipe stems dating from c.1690 through to c.1840
They are fairly thin clean looking stems and they are are similar length throughout on this item.
I have softened the edges on each piece so they are not sharp then threaded them onto a waxed string cord.
I chose to use two pieces at the base of the necklace because of the nice impressed pattern on them.
The total length is approx 56cm (22 inches).
The necklace is an unusual creation that you can wear for personal pleasure or perhaps as part of a reenactment costume.

They are fairly thin clean looking stems and they are arranged in a pattern according to lengths.

Broken Pipe Pieces from Cheshire - Many Makers' Marks
A group of clay pipe pieces all collected from farmland at Nantwich in Cheshire, England. The overall date range of these pieces begins around c.1640 and ends around c.1880. This is a group from my private collection, originally a study group showing pieces all collected in the same place. Many of the late 17th-early 18th Century bowl bases have makers' marks stamped into the clay, so this is an ideal collection for anyone wanted to study marks. Other bowls are plain or with some decoration. None of the bowls are complete. This is quite a heavy batch so most of the cost is the postage which is all included in the price.

Clay Pipe Bowls from Yorkshire, England - GROUP 1.
A small group of clay pipe bowls all found in the village of Bedale in Yorkshire, England, several years ago. These were recovered from farmland and some of the bowls are a bit weathered and chipped with age and burial as would be expected. The four thicker bowls on the left of the picture are older dating from c.1660-1670 and are typical thick rounded styles made locally at that time. The other three on thee right date from c.1720-40, then a decorated Masonic design c.1840-1860, then a plain bowl c.1850-1900
PRICE INCLUDES POSTAGE AND PACKING.
Pipe Bowl with Acorns Design

This pipe bowl dates from c.1860-1900. Although plain on the sides and its beauty is revealed by the design that runs up the front seam which consists of bunches of acorns and leaves. There is a small scroll shaped handle on the bottom of the bowl.

TWO BOWLS - Beehive and Glasgow Flourish
Two pipe bowls with attractive decorations. The one on the left comes from America and has a design on each side, one side being a beehive and the other a small sun with rays. I am unsure of the date, perhaps c.1870-1920. The other pipe has a plant leaf design which is called Glasgow Flourish, the pipe was perhaps produced by one of the Scottish firms in Glasgow in the 1900 period.

Turk Pipe Bowl
Pipe bowl shaped as a Turk head. These came into fashion in England during the first decades of the 19th Century and remain popular from then on being copied in many forms. This is a fairly simple design where the face features were added to the original mould over a standard pipe shape whereas some others are much more detailed. I suspect this one dates from the 1860-1920 period. There is a small chip on the tip of the beard. A very striking piece.

Slipper Bowl and RAOB Buffalo Head Bowl
TWO pipe bowls dating from c.1900-1920. I recovered them from an old bottle dump many years ago. The plain bowl with the "slipper" shaped heel on the base was made by the firm of Chapple who operated in Newton Abbot in Devon, England at that time. The other pipe bowl has a buffalo face on the front and was a design for the RAOB Society most probably produced by the firm of Pollocks of Manchester (NOTE: Spur is broken off base of bowl). BOTH BOWLS INCLUDED IN THIS SALE

Tree Stump Clay Pipe Bowl
Lovely pipe bowl with a tree stump design which is one of the more pleasing to look at shapes I have seen in this topic. It dates from c.1860-1900 and is likely English in origin. It displays well on the good side although the other side has a small hole of about 5mm diameter. Some slight chipping to the rim.

Queen Victoria and Gentleman
Lovely pipe bowl with a very detailed portrait of Queen Victoria on one side and a well dressed gentleman on the other. The picture here shows both sides very well although to see this pipe in real life under a scope is amazing. I would imagine it dates from c.1890-1900. Some slight chipping to the rim but otherwise a nice clean pipe bowl.

Football Theme Pipe Bowl
Clay pipe bowl dating from c.1920-1940 and with a football theme on both sides. The pipe would have been pure white when made and as it was smoked it took on the lovely brown colouring it now has.

Scalloped Small Pipe
A small pipe with a scalloped pattern I dug in the 1970's from a bottle dump. I think the design might originate from a Northern European maker, perhaps Germany, Holland or France. I also dug up another part pipe of identical design and fitted the two together. Although they do not match perfectly it should be possible to join them and display as one pipe if you want. There are a couple of iron stains on the pieces. The centre of stem has a diamond pattern within a border.

Three pipe bowls of various dates. Thorn design c.1880-1920, Acorn design c.1880-1920 (this piece might be from Pollocks of Manchester and from the 1980's using old mould), Scallop/leaf design c.1880-1920. All in a clean condition and display well.

FOUR Pipe Bowls including McLardy Dublin
These are all plain pipe bowls dating from c.1890-1920 and the shapes show the variety of styles. The longest piece has the makers name McLardy who were a firm from Manchester in England, the back of the bowl stamped Dublin (many pipes for Irish people being made in England). Another short pipe has just the mouth tip missing, another one has a makers name on it.
PRICE INCLUDES POSTAGE AND PACKING.
The Very Thing Patent Pipe
A very unusual pipe although this one has suffered rather! The bowl carries the wording The Very Thing Patent and I would imagine dates from the late 19th/early 20th Century. The stem hole passes through the smoking chamber where it ends with a metal pin holder. The pin is still with the pipe and has what I would describe as an opalised glass drop on the end of it which is attractive close up. The idea was that you smoked the pipe and when the stem became clogged up with tobacco juices it would be possible to clean it easily. Looking at it from a practical angle the pin is very long and perhaps the idea was that it remained in place while the pipe was being smoked, thus making the pin hot and keeping the juices from clogging up as they cooled down after the smoke. I am really not sure how functional this would have been and whether it was a very successful idea. All said it is an unusual collectors piece even though it has a couple of messy looking breaks on the stem.

FIVE Thick Walled Pipe Bowls
I have grouped these as a set of very thick walled styles. They date from c.1890-1920. Although plain one is marked Cork on the stem and one Dublin on the rear of the bowl. One has a beaded pattern around the bowl. The thicker walled pipes were often short pieces no more than 4 inches long when new and were favoured by working people as they could be held in the mouth without needing to hold them.

20 PIECES - Mini Sherlock Holmes Clay Pipe Bowls
A bulk group of TWENTY Mini Sherlock Holmes clay pipe bowls. They originate from a 1900 period toy factory in Germany which produced them. I imagine they were intended as bubble pipes for children at that time and would have had wooden straw-like stems added which pushed into the sockets. As you can see from the scale of the ruler in the picture they are small. The curved "Gourd" shaped pipe has become well known as a style associated with Sherlock Holmes. These are all nice clean pieces, some have tiny moulding flaws on them from production but if you add stems yourself of a suitable material they could actually be smoked. They look nice as decorations too, perhaps hung on string and made into a mobile.
NOTE: The chamber size on these is about an inch deep, the size of a large thimble.

Scotland Pipe
A traditional Scottish pipe marked on the side. I believe this one was manufactured by one of the last firms operating in Glasgow in Scotland in the 1960's. The pipe could date from between c.1930 and 1960. The pipe was quite a mass produced item back then and this one has a fairly rushed trimmed appearance.

Miniature Eagle Claw Clay Cigarette Holder
This is a recent creation by archaeologist D.Higgins using a late 19th Century mould which is numbered 178. The bowl is shaped like an eagle claw gripping an egg. It is a popular design that was copied many times from the mid 19th Century onwards by lots of pipe makers. This piece is very small and displays well, it could be smoked if you wish. There is a small mould defect on the front claw from when it was made. The entire pipe is no more than 6cm long with a tiny bowl chamber.

THREE Old Metal Finds
Group of THREE old metal items as follows: An ancient Roman brooch which has been buckled from being buried for about 2000 years. This find came from England in the East I was told but I can not be any more specific than that. It has some slight decoration on it. The next item is a hat badge which I dug up from an old bottle dump in the 1980's in Devon and is marked Royal Engineers. The third metal item is an old white-metal toy of a train carriage which I dug up from an old bottle dump in Devon dating from about 1900-1925.

Pipe Rack with Glass Door
An attractive solid wood pipe rack with a framed glass door and brass lock. I would imagine this dates from the mid to late 20th Century but it could be older, my knowledge of these is very limited. The wood appears to be stained solid oak with mortice/tenon joints (not plywood). There are holes for six short pipes with rests inside and the door has a lovely key plate made of polished brass although I do not have a key for it. The rack will sit on a shelf or has holes so it can be fixed to a wall. Price includes postage and packing. Sizes: 17cm wide, 12cm deep, 22cm tall.

Clay Tobacco Pipes from Exeter and Topsham
Printed A4 size Document with durable clear plastic thermal bound cover
Suitable for researchers, archaeologists and students
CONTENTS:
This is my own archaeological report covering two sites in the Exeter area in Devon that I was given special permission to collect on
during 2001.
26 pages of text including:
an overview of the Exeter area pipe making industry
About the two sites investigated
Notes about the pipes studied
Every pipe is numbered and a listing of features for each record is included
References
A simple bar chart of makers
A site location map
Site plans
3 pages of black & white photo plates,
2 pages of colour plates including the cover photo
6 pages of illustrated clay pipes found, scale 1:1
Approx 100 clay pipes/pieces were drawn from the two sites, mostly of the 1600-1750 period and show the typical Exeter styles found. The predominant styles before about 1800 were plain with a line of milling around the rim and a large flat heel.
It is hoped that this work will find it's place among other reports on regional English clay pipes and will compliment work by
other researchers as well as shedding light on new bowl forms.
