I have been making clay pipes since 1998 and my present kiln stands about waist height tall. It is a top-loader fired by an advanced computer system which we developed in-house to have very precise control over some of our other items such as unique crystal glazed vases. The kiln can also be used for scientific tests as the computer produces graphs of the firing and the close tracking of temperature as shown in the image above. The kiln itself reminds me of some sort of space shuttle and does actually have tiles inside which are of the same technological origin. I am not sure what pipe makers of the 19th Century would have made of this, I expect they would have preferred their coal fired kilns!

DAWNMIST STUDIO CLAY PIPES Made Solely by Heather Coleman

Michael Jackson Limited Edition Clay Pipe

During the 19th Century a number of well known pipe making firms such as Gambier and Fiolet in France, and the Crop family in London produced portrait pipes of many famous people of their time which are now sought after by collectors. As a clay pipe maker I am carrying the tradition through into the 21st Century and from time to time intend to bring some limited edition pipes to my inventory. I am pleased to be able to make this pipe available which is a Tribute to the world famous pop icon Michael Jackson. His death in 2009 made big headlines and the family allowed the world to gaze in on their sorrow during the funeral where he was brought onto the stage in a golden coffin with floral wreaths.
In my design I chose to portray him as he was seen in recent times with dark glasses and hand gesture meaning peace. I have added real gold gilding to the base of the pipe and in his hair I have used lines of Platinum gilding. The pipe has a socket with a cork and comes with a stem which will fit into this so that you can smoke it if you wish to. You may prefer just to display this pipe in your collection.
I do not intend to make more than 50 of these and so each piece has its own number. The use of colour for the hair varies on each pipe and so when you order you will get the next pipe I pick out of the box which might look slightly different from the one in the front of the picture shown here. The pieces in the background show the other styles, I hand painted each pipe individually making them all slightly unique but similar. The pipes were fired three times, once to bake the clay, secondly for coloured glazes and finally for pure gold and platinum gilding.

I have a small number of these available

1700 style English Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

This is one of my new designs based on a more robust form of English clay pipe that would have been in fashion between c.1680 and 1740. The bowl is plain all over except for a part-milled pattern on the rim as traditionals would have had. The stem of this piece I chose to be approx 7 inches long with a strong join to the bowl. The smoking chamber size is approx 35mm deep and 16mm diameter on the inside at the rim. The surface is all hand burnished on the bowl and along the stem giving it that artistic personal touch to each one. Note the stems on the new batch have a slight graceful curve near the mouth end (the pic above shows an earlier batch with dead straight stems. The base is marked with my studio or personal name. I can recommend this pipe as a good one to buy which I created to last a bit longer than the longer narrower pieces. This pipe can be smoked. The mouth end is NOT glazed.

1640-1660 style English Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

A pipe based on styles smoked in the 1640-60 period and suitable for English, Dutch, German or American re-enactments. These are approx 7 inches long (18cm) and are hand burnished on the bowl and stem making them lovely and smooth. They have a slightly bulbous shape with a thicker rim than others I produce. A line of milling is added to the rim as originals had. They are a neat design and can be smoked. Bowl chamber is approx 12mm dia by approx 20mm deep. The mouth end is NOT glazed.

Gothic Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

Some of the original 18th Century clay pipes in my collection have some quite bizarre looking shapes to them and it was these items that inspired me to create this design which I call a Dawnmist Studio Gothic. Although the smoking chamber inside is round with a gradual taper the outer profile of this pipe has a very angled appearance which has a lot of appeal. Sometimes I trim the bowl rim closer to the hunched-back of the bowl than shown in the image here so keep that in mind if you order one. I originally created this design several years ago and am pleased to have a few more to offer. The surfaces are all hand burnished before firing and are silky smooth to the touch. The mouth end is very smooth but not glazed. There is a very slight downward bend towards the mouth end to give the design extra flair. All Dawnmist pipes are made soley by me. Stem length approx 9 and a half inches (25cm), smoking chamber approx 17mm dia x 35mm deep.

Stylised 17th Century ONE-OFF Piece by Heather Coleman

From time to time I create a few one-off pieces styled like 17th Century English pipes and sometimes I allow my imagination to run away. This pipe is just one of these creations which was formed by hand free-style and has a smoking chamber of approx 12mm dia x 28mm deep. I made this one with a thick stem near the bowl and stamped my mark on the top which is a letter H. It has a slightly asymmetrical shape which gives it character and the surface is burnished to a nice soft touch all over. Stem length approx 15cm (6 inch). The mouth end is not glazed. I might make similar pieces in the future but non will be exactly like this one so this is a good chance to buy a special pipe.

Forest Deer Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

This was one of the first decorated designs I created back in the earlier part of this decade and I have recently revived this mould giving it a new lease of life. The pipe has the trunk of an oak tree running up the back of the bowl and below the branches on one side stands a deer in the forest while the other side shows some acorns. In the past pipes with this theme were often sold to Druids or members of the Order of Foresters and in this day I hope one will be your companion while you are out and about enjoying nature. Stem length 19cm (approx. 7 and a half inches long). Bowl chamber inside dims are approx 15mm dia by 25mm. Surfaces are all hand burnished before firing and are silky smooth to the touch. The mouth end is very smooth but not glazed. Note that on some pieces I make there might be a slight bend at the mouth end to give the design stylish flair. This design made soley by me.

President Barack Obama Pipe by Heather Coleman, Dawnmist Studio

I have made and sold a small batch of Limited Edition clay pipes depicting the head of President Barack Obama and I am very pleased with how well these have come out. The portrait of the President is shown and the base decorated with a lovely scene of the whole family standing on the lawn in front of The White House - I have even included the pet dog!

The pipes have been designed with the smoker in mind as well as the collector and so a cork with hole is supplied with each pipe, however, I am not able to supply a stem to go with it and therefore if you should intend to actually smoke the pipe then I would suggest taking a stem from another in your collection to use. For collectors the stem is not so important but a cork with hole is provided anyway.

In the 19th Century is was quite common for European firms to model portrait pipes of famous people of their time and with this creation I am bringing this age old aspect of pipe making into this century. A few US Presidents were celebrated on clay pipes made in America in the 19th Century as well as some made in France and Germany. I have had the personal pleasure of sending the new President one of my portrait pipes as a gift in recent months.

Each pipe comes with it's own unique number stamped into the clay. I am not intending to make more than 100 of these and so this is a good chance for smokers and collectors to get an example of this fine pipe. I would imagine in time they will become quite valuable.

The width of the pipe from shoulder to shoulder tips is 7cm. The height of the pipe from top of head to base of suit is 10cm.

Dawnmist Studio "The Westminster" LONDON 1700-1740 by Heather Coleman

A traditional London style tavern pipe based on original pieces found in The Big City dating from the period 1700 to 1740. This is a design that I made several years ago that was used in a TV documentary as the photograph included of the actor shows (image is copyright).
Stem length about 31cm (Approx 12 inches) and the pipe has a tall slender bowl which has some milling to the rim. The smoking chamber size is approx 15mm diameter at the rim and 40mm deep. The bowl has a flat heel on the base. This pipe can be smoked. The mouth end has been smoothed but not glazed. The surfaces of these are highly burnished and silky smooth soft to the touch.

    Partsch Pipe Bowl

These tall bowl pipes originate from Eastern Europe and I think this piece dates from the early 20th Century, perhaps around c.1900-1930. They are sometimes referred to as Coffee House Pipes and would have had lids on them as well as a long wooden stem. Formed from red clay with a glossy glaze finish. This piece is marked Partsch on one side and has a small impressed design with wings on the other. There is a small flake chip near the rim. I have had this in my personal collection for about 10 years. PRICE INCLUDES POSTAGE AND PACKING.

    Scottish pipe c.1920-1950

I have a few pipes available as shown in the picture. Your purchase is for ONE pipe and includes the postage and packing cost as well so there is nothing extra to pay other than the basket price shown. These are proper old Scottish clay pipes made most likely by a firm such as Mc.Dougall or White who operated in Glasgow until the middle of the 20th Century. They were the last firms in Scotland to close when clays fell out of demand. This item is not a high quality product looking a bit over-fired with some surface blemishes and spots; should you wish to actually smoke one then I highly suggest you give it a good wash by boiling in water first as it has been sitting in a box for decades. A lovely proper old Scottish piece ideal for display, about three inches long.

Group of FOUR Old Assorted Scottish pipes from c.1920-1950

Your purchase will include a group of pipes almost identical to the pipes shown in the picture and includes the postage and packing cost as well. These are proper old Scottish clay pipes made most likely by a firm such as Mc.Dougall or White who operated in Glasgow until the middle of the 20th Century. They were the last firms in Scotland to close when clays fell out of demand. In the early 20th Century the main industry almost ended after WWI with cigarettes and wooden pipes taking the lead but a few folk still wanted the humble clay and created demand. I would imagine looking at this group that they are of not the best quaity products since some of them have slight spots in the clay and look slightly over-fired. Some firms offered the lower quality pipes for use at fairgrounds and village festivals as targets for shooting at; others for use as bubble pipes for children. This group is non the less a fairly clean looking lot and should you wish to actually smoke these olde clays I suggest you give them a good wash by boiling them in water first as they have been sitting in a box for decades. The stems are rather quaintly marked Scotland and also Glasgow. A lovely little group of pipes, proper old Scottish pieces, ideal for display. They were working mens pipes and so they are about 3 inches long.

Old Scottish Fairground Shooting pipes from c.1920-1950

Your purchase will include ONE of the pipes shown in the picture and includes the postage and packing cost as well. These are proper old Scottish pipes most likely made by the firm of either Mc.Dougall or White of Glasgow. They are decorated with a simple basket pattern and some Scottish thistles. They were produced from a mould that was made for only half of the length of stem because there was high demand for short low quality pieces to use as targets at fairgrounds. And so looking at them the ends of the stems are identical having a rugged moulded appearance rather than broken. The pipes are of lower quality clay and appear to have been over-fired. They are marked Scotland on each stem. They are an unusual variation from the usual complete pipes. They could actually be smoked if you should choose to give it a go but do boil in water to kill any germs first as they have been sitting in a box for several decades.

Queen Victoria Portrait pipe bowl by Fiolet

The head of Queen Victoria which is a French made item by the firm of L.Fiolet of St.Omer (marked LF). The stem is missing as is often the case with these pieces. The pipe was recovered from an old English bottle dump and some grey colouring remains either from being smoked or being buried in a hot fire. The pipe has some colour still remaining on some of the features such as the eyes, brows and crown. The moulding on this piece is very detailed. A lovely piece for any collection. I would think it dates from between 1887 and 1920. PRICE INCLUDES POSTAGE AND PACKING.

Mephistopheles - One of the Princes of Hell

A rather striking face pipe which is stunning to display in any collection and I do not see these come up often. Just the very tip of his nose missing. I assume it was a character from legend named mephistopheles who is said to be one of the Princes of Hell. Examples appear as carved meerschaum pipes and was copied by clay pipe makers as this example reveals. The features of this pipe are well moulded and very expressive. Date of this one around 1890-1920, a similar or same design was registered in London by the firm of W G Brown & Son in 1888. PRICE INCLUDES POSTAGE AND PACKING.

Portrait Pipe - Likely for Negro Tobacco

A lovely well moulded negro portrait which was likely made as advertising for a best tobacco brand of that name in the 1870-1910 period. I am not sure who made this pipe but I think it is English. No collection should be without this piece which is one of the better one's I think. Has a small chip on the side near the shoulder, otherwise a nice clean piece. The stem is missing as is often the case with pipes like this. PRICE INCLUDES POSTAGE AND PACKING.

Very Large Advertising Pipe bowl of Negro Head

I have had this piece in my collection for about a decade and have decided to sell it as I have a complete pipe. It is a large character head which I think might have been made to advertise a best Negro Tobacco brand, usually displayed in tobacconist windows. I do know that several makers in England produced this design, originally with a registration mark on the stem by Holland of Manchester, but later on I think the moulds were passed to other firms or the design was copied without the mark or name on the stem. Some versions were painted black. Some were even smoked although the bowl is 7cm tall! This one came from an old bottle dump and is very clean all over except for very small rust stains on one side and on the rim. Again, no collection should be without one of these. Date around 1880-1925. PRICE INCLUDES POSTAGE AND PACKING.

Head of a Greek Bearded Character

I am not sure of the actual title of this design but it looks like the portrait of a Greek character similar to Bacchus although this one does not have grapes but flowers on the side of the socket. I think it was produced by either a German or Dutch firm some time in the mid 20th Century so it is not as old as most pieces. There is a number either 121 or 127 on the socket. Pipe in good clean condition. These bearded face pipes are always very striking to the eye and stand out well in a collection. PRICE INCLUDES POSTAGE AND PACKING.

Clay Pipe of a Bearded Man with Hat c.1940-1960

A complete socket stem type pipe probably produced in the 1940-60 period and marked on the side: AU NARGUILEH with a mould number of what looks like 118. I have found a similar design produced by a German manufacturer in an old catalogue of that period but I am not sure if this piece originated from Germany or Austria or France. The pipe has been smoked and has begun to season in colour. It was formed in a three piece mould and hand painted with black, red and green glazes. The stem looks to be made of Bakelite and is push fitted with a cork. The inside of the bowl still smells of tobacco and has a crust remaining. The pipe including the mouth piece is approx 7 inches long. A lovely display piece.

Sailor's Head Pipe by Goedewaagen of Gouda c.1930-1960

A complete pipe dating from I would think the 1940-1960 period with a slightly smoked bowl. The stem has a paper label marked Goedewaagen Pijp, Gouda, Holland. The character seems to either portray a Turk or Mariner perhaps. This firm were making clays of many designs during the 19th Century although the majority that come up date from the beginning to middle of the 20th Century especially with the blue paper label and they are most frequently reported from America as many were exported there. The pipe is in good condition and stem length approx 4 and a half inches long.

Clay Pipe Bowl Portraying Lady with Hat c.1880-1920

Pipe bowls with the portraits of women wearing hats always display well and look good in any collection. They come in many variations some representing characters from the late 19th to early 20th Century such as writers, performers, Royalty etc. Others are less known. I have come across this one on several occasions but I am not sure who it is. The detail on the hair and hat are nice and I think it is an English product by the design and way it was moulded. It was recovered from an old bottle dump and has some very tiny flakes near the rim but hardly visible and to be expected on most pieces recovered. A lovely piece.

Central-Eastern European LAMA Clay Pipe c.1940-1960

This style of pipe is often attributed to pipe makers in the region of Central to Eastern Europe although some might have been produced in Germany and France. This is a complete pipe with a socket stem fitted with what looks like a bakelite mouth piece. It has been well smoked and the seasoning of the bowl brings out the moulded decorations nicely which appear to be a sport/game theme. There is a fish scale pattern on some sides with cups, diamond/heart/spade/club, bats and balls, skittles and the wording LAMA who I assume is the firm who made it. There is also a sort of symbolic face of a bearded man. A small flake of clay missing near the rim on one side but otherwise in good condition.

Black Burnished African Clay Pipe from c.1940-60

A socket style pipe with a heavy metal stem (iron?) and a lovely personal quality hand carved bowl which has been burnished. The bowl has a spaceous smoking chamber with carved patterns around the upper portion and on the front. I think the clay was either a dark brown/black colour or the pipe was burned specially in a kiln to give it this colour. It has been smoked. I am not sure of the origin of this piece but it is likely to be a product from Africa from I would imagine the 1940-60 period.

    Modern Burmese Clay Pipe c.1960-1990

This is a recently made pipe which has a form that is typical of pipes made in Burma. From what I read in research originals were produced as early as the late 18th Century and throughout the 19th Century and finds are sometimes made on farmland. I have an original piece in my collection made of a heavy dark coloured stoneware clay and the quality is much finer than the modern version. This modern piece of a jet black coloured clay looks rather stylish with a slightly curved stem likely made of brass with a silver coating. The pipe looks functional but has been sitting around in a box for years so might not appeal to the smoker, however it displays very well. Stem length approx 6 inches (15cm). The bowl depth on these pipes from Burma is as deep as it is wide at approx 20mm.

Three pipes made from what appears to be polished Wood and sections of Acrylic. These are part of a collection that belonged to an elderly gentleman who lived to be 96 despite being an avid smoker! They have been well used and heavily smoked with some damage (splits and loose or tight fitting), however, they might appeal to someone such as an artist as study pieces for their design and use of materials.

Meerschaum Hand Carved Bearded Man Pipe with Case c.1920-1950

Meerschaum pipes are often hard to date as they were made over a long period during the 19th and 20th Centuries often with repeated standard designs of bird claws, skulls, Turks and Bearded Men to name a few. The finest pieces were made by master craftsmen and are some of the most amazing miniature fine art carvings one could ever wish to see although the majority are of much simpler form but often have very expressive faces like this piece. Meerschaum is a natural material which mainly occurs in underground deposits in Turkey and is mined there even today although the supply of fine raw material is controlled by suppliers and not easy to get hold of. Reconstituted material is sometimes available. These pipes are all hand carved from the block which is softened in water to begin and after carving dries out and matures. It is very porous and soaks in the tobacco juices creating often a rich seasoning which makes some of them highly prized. Sadly this piece has seen better days having broken at the base and has a rather messy looking repair, however it it is nicely carved and displays well from the front. The character is a bearded man with some sort of helmet or cap. perhaps a biblical character and I think would appeal to anyone beginning a Meerschaum collection or as a study piece for art. The original case is included. The pipe bowl is approx 3 inches tall from tip of beard to rim. There is a metal collar and an acrylic mouth piece (poor condition).

Three Painted Pipes, German or Austrian? c.1950-1980

Three pipes which I think may have originated from Germany or Austria. The bowls are made of what looks like a slip-cast light clay and are double walled. They are hand painted with some sort of gloss enamel paints and the original owner has smoked one of them causing a part of the bowl to break off inside. The mouth pieces are acrylic. They look well as displayed but I would not suggest they are smoked as they have been sitting in a box for a long time and I am not sure how this kind of pipe should be cleaned. The price is for ALL THREE pipes and includes postage and packing.
