Tudor Heart Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

This has to be one of my favorite creations this year and was inspired by a very early pipe of the late Tudor Period that I have in my collection where the base of the bowl is carved like a heart. The famous Devon born sea pirate Sir Walter Raleigh was one of the first to have tobacco brought back to England as a gift and to promote smoking. Being a favorite of Queen Elizabeth 1st it is said that he offered her a pipe to smoke and it may well be true that she accepted although I expect it would not be popular in this day and age!
Tobacco was enjoyed by early mariners and those who could afford to have some brought back from the New World but was condemned by Religious leaders. Some of the earliest clay pipes made in Europe would have been hand made by potters who would have been asked to make them in small numbers, perhaps as gifts at first, but it was not long before hundreds were being mass produced for the crowd.

The Dawnmist Studio Tudor Heart pipe has a very small bowl about the size of the tip of your finger just like the very first ones did. Each one I make is moulded, then trimmed and hand burnished to a high standard. The heart is then carved and stamped. Ideal for personal use and suitable for re-enactments of the 1580 to 1640 period.

Approx 7 inches long with a slightly curved stem. Bowl approx 1 inch (2cm) tall. This pipe can be smoked and the heart allows it to stand upright. It makes a beautiful display piece.

BLACKBEARD 1718 Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

This pipe is one of my new designs for 2008. The shape of the bowl is copied from original pipes made in the Port City of Bristol in England and exactly like those that were exported world-wide at the time of 1690-1730. Originals were often plain but many of the Bristol pipes had a cartouche on the side with the makers mark.
For this special creation I have taken the date of 1718 which is significant with the death of the pirate Blackbeard and added that to the side of the bowl. No original clay pipes are known to exist that would have marked an event like that, until now that is.
This pipe is perfect for pirates and re-enactors of that period.

Approx 5 inches long with a slightly curved stem. Bowl approx 1 & a half inch (4cm) tall. This pipe can be smoked. The pipe is moulded, then trimmed and finally hand burnished to a high standard.

Some original examples of Bristol clay pipes from my collection are shown here (not for sale). Thousands of pipes like these were exported from England to the West Indies as well as ports world-wide in the early 18th Century.

17th Century Mariners Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

I created this design several years ago based on original clay pipes in my collection made for early Dutch Mariners of the 17th Century. The original idea for this pipe is thought to have been based on the Biblical character of Jona and the Whale although I think the creature on the stem looks more like a sea serpent with scales and teeth which a whale would not have. It might even be that they were first produced because of tales of early colonists in the Florida swamps who were confronted with crocodiles.
If you should happen to find yourself face to face with such a creature while re-enacting using one of my Mariner clay pipes do send me a picture!

This pipe is Approx 7 inches long and can be smoked. Surface fettled and hand burnished to a high standard.

Forest Deer & Acorns Pipe by Heather Coleman

A forest deer with traditional Oak Tree and Acorn theme adorn this clay pipe which has a smaller 17th Century period style of bowl. I designed this pipe several years ago and it was very popular so I have re-engraved the mould to bring this design back to life again.

Approx 7 inches long with a straight or slightly curved stem. Bowl approx 3cm tall. This pipe can be smoked.

Dawnmist Studio 17th Century Style Pipe

A traditional style clay pipe with small bowl based on English clays of the 17th Century and ideal for Pirates and Re-enactments of the period 1630 to 1680. This style was in use in England and Northern Europe at this period and was exported to the colonies in the New World.
Dawnmist studio clays are individually hand burnished. Approx 5 inches long with a straight stem. Bowl approx 3cm tall. This pipe can be smoked.

Dawnmist Studio clay tobacco pipes are made not far from this historic house.

Hayes Barton in Devon, England. Birth place of Sir Walter Raleigh the famous Devon born Sea Captain and Pirate who founded the Virginia Colony in the New World and was later sent in search of El Dorado Gold in South America. He is also known for making the habit of smoking in England popular in the Tudor period.

Religious leaders of the time as well as King James Ist were not keen on the idea of this filthy habit and people were persecuted for smoking. I wonder what Sir Walter would have to say about the recent smoking bans; history has once again come a full circle. Perhaps blowing bubbles is a healthier option!

It is said that when his servant first saw him smoking he thought that he was on fire and threw water over his head! So I have made up a little ditty which I hope you will find amusing...

"Sir Walter smoked a pipe of clay
The latest habit of his day
His servant thought he did'nt ought'er
came and doused his head with water!"

or the Olde Devonshire version might sound like this

"Zur Wal'er smok't a poipe a clay
The latest 'abit of ee's day
Ee's zervan' thort 'ee didn' ough'er
Came an' doused 'ee's 'ed wiv wa'er

Clay Tobacco Pipes from Exeter and Topsham

Printed A4 size Document with durable clear plastic thermal bound cover
Suitable for researchers, archaeologists and students

CONTENTS:

This is my own archaeological report covering two sites in the Exeter area in Devon that I was given special permission to collect on during 2001.
26 pages of text including:
an overview of the Exeter area pipe making industry
About the two sites investigated
Notes about the pipes studied
Every pipe is numbered and a listing of features for each record is included
References
A simple bar chart of makers
A site location map
Site plans
3 pages of black & white photo plates,
2 pages of colour plates including the cover photo
6 pages of illustrated clay pipes found, scale 1:1
Approx 100 clay pipes/pieces were drawn from the two sites, mostly of the 1600-1750 period and show the typical Exeter styles found. The predominant styles before about 1800 were plain with a line of milling around the rim and a large flat heel. It is hoped that this work will find it's place among other reports on regional English clay pipes and will compliment work by other researchers as well as shedding light on new bowl forms.
