I have been making clay pipes since 1998 and my present kiln stands about waist height tall. It is a top-loader fired by an advanced computer system which we developed in-house to have very precise control over some of our other items such as unique crystal glazed vases. The kiln can also be used for scientific tests as the computer produces graphs of the firing and the close tracking of temperature as shown in the image above. The kiln itself reminds me of some sort of space shuttle and does actually have tiles inside which are of the same technological origin. I am not sure what pipe makers of the 19th Century would have made of this, I expect they would have preferred their coal fired kilns!

DAWNMIST STUDIO CLAY PIPES Made Solely by Heather Coleman

Tudor Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

My Tudor pipe is based on original pieces in my collection dating from around 1590-1610. These have tiny bowls that allow just a pinch of tobacco and are good for testing various flavours without tainting a larger bowl. Of course in the Tudor period tobacco was so expensive few could afford to use more than a pinch now and then.

The Dawnmist Studio Tudor pipe has a very small bowl about the size of the tip of your finger just like the very first ones did. The smoking chamber size is approx 9mm diameter by 18mm deep. Stem length approx 14cm (5 inches). My makers mark varies on this batch. The surfaces are all hand burnished giving a smooth finish and a milling pattern added around the rim. Ideal for personal use and suitable for re-enactments of the 1580 to 1610 period. Again please note the small smoking chamber size which is half the size of English clays of the mid 17th Century.

1616 Shakespeare Pipe by Heather Coleman

NEW 2012 - My 1616 clay pipe is a design I based on a style that would have been around at the time of the famous English Playwright/Poet William Shakespeare. He was born in 1564, wrote most of his well known works between 1589-1613 and passed away in 1616.

The pipe has a very small bowl about the size of the tip of your finger just like those used in his time period. The smoking chamber size is approx 9mm diameter by 18mm deep. Stem length approx 13cm (5 inches). The surfaces are all hand burnished giving a smooth finish and a milling pattern added around the rim. Ideal for personal use and suitable for re-enactments of the Tudor period. Again please note the small smoking chamber size which is half the size of English clays of the mid 17th Century.

17th Century style WHITE clay pipe by Heather Coleman

This style pipe has a bowl form that would be suitable for the time period of 1630 through to 1670 so it covers quite a time range for re-enactments. The style would be more suited for a mid-range date of 1650, being larger for 1630 but small for 1670. These are short pieces pressed in the mould, then trimmed and I burnish these all over leaving them with a smooth finish. A line of milling is added to the rim as originals had. They are a neat design and can be smoked. The pipes are approx 5 inches long (15cm). Bowl chamber is approx 12mm dia by approx 20mm deep. The mouth end is NOT glazed.

17th century style BLACK (DARK CHOCOLATE BROWN) clay pipe by Heather Coleman

NEW 2011 - This style pipe has a bowl form that would be suitable for the time period of 1630 through to 1670 so it covers quite a time range for re-enactments. The style would be more suited for a mid-range date of 1650, being larger for 1630 but small for 1670. These are short pieces pressed in the mould, then trimmed and I burnish these all over leaving them with a smooth finish. What makes them exciting is that I have made them using a genuine Black clay which I hope will appeal to people for a number of reasons. Black clay is one of the more exotic clays I sometimes use in the studio. Although it is termed black it is actually a very dark brown which goes more black the higher the temperature it is fired at in the kiln, some batches being very dark brown and some almost black. A line of milling is added to the rim as originals had. They are a neat design and can be smoked. The pipes are approx 5 inches long (15cm). Bowl chamber is approx 12mm dia by approx 20mm deep. The mouth end is NOT glazed.

Stylised 17th Century Dog's-tail Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

This pipe is suitable for reenactments of the whole of the 17th Century or any smoker who wants a pipe with a thick stem and some character. I have called it a Dog's-tail pipe because it is based on an old design but I have accentuated the stem.
Stem length approx 7 inches (18cm). Bowl internal diameter at the rim approx 13mm, depth of smoking chamber approx 22mm. There is a line of fine milling right on the rim. The pipe is made to a high standard and hand stroke-burnished to a smooth touch just like originals. The mouth end is NOT glazed. This pipe can be smoked.

17th Century Mariners Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

I created this design several years ago based on original clay pipes in my collection made for early Dutch Mariners of the 17th Century. The original idea for this pipe is thought to have been based on the Biblical character of Jona and the Whale although I think the creature on the stem looks more like a sea serpent with scales and teeth which a whale would not have. It might even be that they were first produced because of tales of early colonists in the Florida swamps who were confronted with crocodiles.
This pipe is 19cm long (Approx 7 inches) and can be smoked with a chamber size of approx 12mm diameter at the rim and depth of about 28mm. The surface has been fettled and hand burnished to a high standard. The mouth end is very smooth but not glazed.

Hello Beastie Pirate Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

A special pipe based on original 17th Century pieces but with a modern twist! Originals are thought to show a mariner being chased by a crocodile, however with my version I have shaped the bowl to look like a certain "mutual friend" pirate character facing another of the great sea creatures... the Kracken! I hope you will enjoy smoking this witty design.
Stem length 8 inches (21cm). The smoking chamber size is approx 35mm deep and 15mm diameter on the inside at the rim. The surface is all hand burnished on the stem and part bowl. This pipe can be smoked. The mouth end is NOT glazed.

These are approx 8 and half inches long (22cm) and are hand burnished on the bowl and stem making them lovely and smooth. They have a slightly bulbous shape with thick walls. A line of milling is added to the rim as originals had. They can be smoked. Bowl chamber is approx 12mm dia by approx 27mm deep. The mouth end is NOT glazed.

Dawnmist Mulberry Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

This design once again takes inspiration from original pieces in my collection dating from the mid to late 17th Century and brings them to life. Mulberry pipes were produced by several makers in England and they were a popular choice to smokers as few clays were decorated at that time. I hope you will find it appeals in this Century too!
Stem length 7 inches (18cm). The smoking chamber size is approx 35mm deep and 14mm diameter on the inside at the rim. The surface is all hand burnished on the stem and part bowl, you can see the stroke lines of hand burnishing in the picture here. This pipe can be smoked. The mouth end is NOT glazed.

Devonshire Hobbit Pipe by Heather Coleman

This is a design I was originally making about three-five years ago. It is a sturdy pipe with a late 17th Century form and a cartouche on the side. The letter H is displayed and could stand for Heather but also I like to think of this pipe as a Devonshire Hobbit pipe. It was inspired by a piece I found when I was very young in the area.
Stem length 7 inches (18cm). The smoking chamber size is approx 35mm deep and 12mm diameter on the inside at the rim. The surface is all hand burnished on the stem and bowl. This pipe can be smoked. The mouth end is glazed with clear gloss glass fired on.

Late 17th Century Style Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

A replica style of pieces often found in England from the middle to the end of the 17th Century. These would also have been exported from England to Colonial sites worldwide. An ideal piece for re-enacments film, drama, TV productions and Pirates.
Can be smoked. Stem length 22cm (approx. 9 inches long). Bowl chamber inside dims are approx 12mm dia by 30mm. Surfaces are all hand burnished before firing and are silky smooth to the touch. The mouth end is very smooth but not glazed.

Dutch 18th Century Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

This pipe is suitable for reenactments of the whole of the 18th Century. The bowl form is a stylised version of the fashionable funnel/egg shaped bowls used by the Dutch during that period. Originals were often much longer than my version but the length is very suitable at 4 and a half inches (11cm) being not too short for general use but not too long to break too easily.
Bowl internal diameter at the rim approx 15mm, depth of smoking chamber approx 35mm. There is a line of fine milling right on the rim edge. The pipe is made to a high standard and hand stroke-burnished to a smooth touch just like originals. The mouth end is NOT glazed. This pipe can be smoked.

Longer Dutch 1700 Style Pipe by Heather Coleman

NEW 2011 - Following the success of last seasons introduction of a short Dutch style pipe I have now created this new design which was inspired by the shapes of Dutch pipes of the time around 1700.
Stem length 9 and half inches (24cm). The smoking chamber size is approx 30mm deep and 15mm diameter on the inside at the rim. The surface is all hand burnished and I have added a milled pattern on the edge of the rim. This pipe can be smoked. The mouth end is NOT glazed.

Devonshire 1700 Tavern Pipe by Heather Coleman

Stem length 10 inches (25cm). The smoking chamber size is approx 35mm deep and 17mm diameter on the inside at the rim. The surface is all hand burnished. This pipe can be smoked. The mouth end is NOT glazed.

1700 style English Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

This is one of my new designs based on a more robust form of English clay pipe that would have been in fashion between c.1680 and 1740. The bowl is plain all over except for a part-milled pattern on the rim as traditionals would have had. The stem of this piece I chose to be approx 7 inches long with a strong join to the bowl. The smoking chamber size is approx 35mm deep and 16mm diameter on the inside at the rim. The surface is all hand burnished on the bowl and along the stem giving it that artistic personal touch to each one. I can recommend this pipe as a good one to buy which I created to last a bit longer than the longer narrower pieces. This pipe can be smoked. The mouth end is NOT glazed.

BLACKBEARD 1718 Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

I created this design back in 2008 and the shape of the bowl is based on original pipes made in the Port City of Bristol in England and exactly like those that were exported in great numbers from there world-wide at the time around 1690-1730. Original pipes from Bristol were often plain and a little longer than my design and they often had a cartouche on the side of the bowl with the makers mark. On my version I have chosen to place a date on the side instead which is 1718, the year when Blackbeard died.
This pipe is perfect for pirates and re-enactors. The pipe length is approx. 5 inches (13cm), bowl internal diameter at the rim approx 15mm, depth of smoking chamber approx. 33mm. The pipe is made to a high standard and hand burnished to a smooth touch. The mouth end is NOT glazed. This pipe can be smoked.

Dawnmist Studio "The Westminster" LONDON 1700-1740 by Heather Coleman

A traditional London style tavern pipe based on original pieces found in The Big City dating from the period 1700 to 1740. This is a design that I made several years ago that was used in a TV documentary as the photograph included of the actor shows (image is copyright).
Stem length about 32cm (Approx 13 inches) and the pipe has a tall slender bowl which has some milling to the rim. The smoking chamber size is approx 15mm diameter at the rim and 40mm deep. This pipe can be smoked. The mouth end has been clear satin glazed. The finish on these is hand burnished.

Gothic Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

Some of the original 18th Century clay pipes in my collection have some quite bizarre looking shapes to them and it was these items that inspired me to create this design which I call a Dawnmist Studio Gothic. Although the smoking chamber inside is round with a gradual taper the outer profile of this pipe has a very angled appearance which has a lot of appeal. The surfaces are all hand burnished. The mouth end is NOT glazed. Stem length approx 9 and a half inches (25cm), smoking chamber approx 17mm dia x 35mm deep.

Nelson at Trafalgar Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

This is my own version of an original that was produced by pipe makers shortly after the Battle of Trafalgar in which Admiral Lord Nelson was fatally wounded. A number of these seem to turn up on archaeological sites in the south of England and my version shows the same scene of Nelson on one side and Britannia on the other although the early 19th Century version would have been twice as long. In the past I have produced these for Royal Navy banquets on HMS Victory as well as descendants of Nelson himself. The surfaces are all hand burnished before firing and are silky smooth to the touch. The mouth end is very smooth but not glazed. All Dawnmist pipes are made soley by me. Stem length approx 18cm (7 inches), smoking chamber approx 20mm dia x 38mm deep.

Forest Deer Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

This was one of the first decorated designs I created back in the earlier part of this decade and I have recently revived this mould giving it a new lease of life. The pipe has the trunk of an oak tree running up the back of the bowl and below the branches on one side stands a deer in the forest while the other side shows some acorns. In the past pipes with this theme were often sold to Druids or members of the Order of Foresters and in this day I hope one will be your companion while you are out and about enjoying nature. Stem length 19cm (approx. 7 and a half inches long). Bowl chamber inside dims are approx 15mm dia by 25mm. Surfaces are all hand burnished before firing and are silky smooth to the touch. The mouth end is glazed (apple green). This design made soley by me.

Terry Pratchett Limited Edition Clay Pipe by Heather Coleman

Here is a chance for you to buy my new Limited Edition figural design. It is a portrait pipe of Sir Terry Pratchett the exceedingly popular English fantasy novel writer who created the Discworld series of books which are now also being turned into films.

I have only made five of these pipes as of November 2011. The first one was sent as a gift directly to Terry Pratchett himself a few weeks ago. Another has been acquired by a National Museum in Holland and one is held in my own portfolio. I anticipate making a few more in 2012, however, my Limited Edition pipes usually amount to less than 50 pieces over a several year period and can have a waiting period of up to three months during busy times.

This is a fully functioning pipe that can be smoked. The portrait of Terry is decorated with images that connect in a tribute to him. These are quite complex pipes to make requiring much care when handling them during manufacture. The design and the mould took several months to complete.

Stem length 15cm (6 inches), smoking chamber size 20mm dia x 50mm deep.

For those interested in Terry Pratchett you might like to know that a one-off pipe I created has been immortalised in the artwork for the Discworld Calender in 2005 as part of an image called Remembering Granny.

President Barack Obama Show Pipe by Heather Coleman

During the 19th Century many figural pipes were made based on famous people of the time...
In keeping with that tradition I have made and sold a small batch of Limited Edition clay pipes depicting the head of President Barack Obama and I am very pleased with how well these have come out. The portrait of the President is shown and the base decorated with a lovely scene of the whole family standing on the lawn in front of The White House - I have even included the pet dog! The first piece I made was sent directly to the President of the United States at The White House.
The smoking chamber is within the upper portion of the bowl and the width of the pipe from shoulder to shoulder tips is 7cm. The height of the pipe from top of head to base of suit is 10cm.

Please Enquire as I make these to order now and then. Allow three months when not in stock.

Michael Jackson Limited Edition Clay Pipe

During the 19th Century a number of well known pipe making firms produced portrait pipes of many famous people of their time which are now sought after by collectors. As a clay pipe maker I am carrying the tradition through into the 21st Century and from time to time intend to bring some limited edition pipes to my inventory. This pipe is a tribute to the world famous pop icon Michael Jackson.
I have added real gold lustre to the base of the pipe and in his hair I have used lines of Platinum. The pipe has a socket with a cork and comes with a stem which will fit into this so that you can smoke it if you wish to. You may prefer just to display this pipe in your collection.
I have not made more than 20 of these and so each piece has its own number. Please enquire to see which pieces are left as the hair colour varies on each pipe, although the pipe will be one of those shown in the image.

There are just FIVE of these now available
    Price is for one pipe.
