Devon and Cornwall Mines Database on CD ROM

Database of 800 Mines

This study, by Heather Coleman, took over three years to compile and a lifetime of interest in the mine workings and minerals of the South West of England. Copies are available only through this website and are a useful resource to researchers, consultant geologists, local Councils and students of mineralogy. It is hoped that this information will help future research and preservation of the mine heritage of the South West.

My interest in the mines of the South West was originally inspired by one of my brothers, a geologist who travelled to Greenland back in the late 1960's with Exeter University to survey the glaciers which at that time was quite a pioneering adventure. After that family holidays and days out often included a visit to a local mine. My brother went on to work for a leading Geological Research Company and my own interest in mines continued to grow.

About a decade ago I started to make a database of every known mine in the South West of England. My idea was to coordinate information so that various studies could easily be made by running queries on the database. My research involved getting any information I could from various sources and putting it on to my own database. I used any books and library documents I could find which I cross checked with modern and old maps. Particularly in the Devon and East Cornwall area I visited the mines both above ground and below in the flooded tunnels.
My database was by no means complete as there were so many mine workings in Devon and Cornwall including short lived trials and larger workings that were amalgamated. I did manage to coordinate information on around 800 sites in this fairly comprehensive project and covered, I hope, all of the major workings as well as many interesting smaller ones.

The sample listing below has been created from my database in area order to give visitors to this website an idea of how the information on the database can be simply presented. I hope it will be of great value and will assist future researchers in this continued field of work.

Also included on this CD study...

As well as the database information I have included dozens of photographs which explore a number of underground tunnels and chambers within the mines. These show a world beneath Devon and Cornwall which few people will ever see and are a valuable insight into the local heritage of the South West.

Sound Recordings added in February of 2008 include rhythmic water dripping down into the darkest depths of a 100 foot shaft and sounds of small stones falling to the bottom.

Over 160 photographs of basic minerals from Devon and Cornwall.

Also included are a number of detailed plans of the underground workings as they were mapped about 15 - 20 years ago. It is hoped that these will serve as an important historical record as many old mine workings are now so unstable that they have fallen in.

Newly added March 2008
