The Dawnmist Listening Ear is a highly sensitive electronically-amplified microphone system designed for listening to and recording very quiet sounds. The system is divided into two parts: firstly a small microphone unit, which is placed so as to pick up the desired sound, secondly a main unit, to which the microphone unit connects via a cable. This contains the battery, controls and external connections. Special design techniques make it possible to have a very long cable between the two units if necessary without impairing the performance of the unit: the system comes with 3 metres if cable as standard, and extension leads of up to 100 metres are available to order. Extension leads can even be "daisy chained" for longer cable runs.
Another special design feature gives the unit very low power consumption, giving a long battery life --- typically 200+ hours from an alkaline battery or 30+ hours from a NiCd or NiMH rechargeable battery.
Connecting up the system is simple. The lead from the microphone unit plugs into the socket labelled MIC on the main unit, headphones or similar are plugged into the Phones socket, and an optional recording device such as a cassette or MiniDisk recorder (or a computer sound card) is plugged into the Line output. The unit is then ready to be switched on.
The system is supplied with a phono to 3.5mm stereo jack lead for the purpose of connecting a recording device, as the 3.5mm stereo jack is the most common type of input connector on recorders. Other recording leads are available to order or may be wired up by the user.
There are only two user controls apart from the on/off switch. The first of these, Pre-Amp Gain , sets the level of amplification from the microphone to the recorder output and the headphone amplifier. The second, Headphone Volume , is used to set a comfortable listening volume at the headphone output, and does not affect the Line output. It is usual to start with the Pre-Amp Gain at minimum (counter clockwise) and increase it gradually as necessary to obtain a clear signal, while the Headphone Volume control is used to set the listening volume at the headphones only and would normally be at some intermediate position --- turning this control fully counter clockwise will mute the headphones irrespective of the recording level.
There are two LED indicators on the main unit: a red
System Fault
indicator, which
flashes if the unit is subjected to an overly loud sound that it cannot reproduce (such as
tapping the microphone) and lights steadily if the integrity of the connection between the
main unit and microphone unit is lost. The orange
Battery Low
indicator lights when
the battery voltage has reduced considerably, to provide a warning to replace the battery
before the unit stops working.
